Google has rolled out what it calls the most significant update to its search engine in over 25 years, introducing a suite of AI-powered enhancements centered on its new AI Mode. Announced at Google I/O on May 19, 2026, the update integrates the company’s latest AI model, Gemini 3.5 Flash, to make search more conversational and proactive. While the traditional blue-link search results remain available, most new features are focused on AI Mode, accessible via a toggle in the search bar.

AI Mode now supports natural, follow-up conversations similar to chatbots like ChatGPT. It introduces 'Search agents' — background AI assistants that monitor the web for personalized updates, such as new sneaker drops from favorite athletes. Users can also leverage improved booking capabilities, where Search uses AI to find and book services like dining, events, or beauty appointments based on specific criteria. For some services, including home repair and pet care, Google will call businesses on the user’s behalf and provide a summary.

Another major addition is Google Antigravity, a no-code application builder now integrated into AI Mode. Users can request interactive tools like fitness trackers or data visualizations, and Antigravity generates them in real time. The feature will roll out fully in summer 2026. Additionally, Google’s Personal Intelligence system syncs data from Gmail, Photos, and soon Calendar to deliver more personalized search responses — all without requiring a subscription.
