Season 4 of HBO’s 'The White Lotus' shifts to the French Riviera, using the Cannes Film Festival as its central backdrop. Created by Mike White, the anthology series continues its exploration of wealth, power, and cultural dissonance, this time through the lens of the global film industry. Filming spans seven months across Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and Paris, with key locations including the Château de la Messardière and Hôtel Martinez, both rebranded as White Lotus properties. A $120 million production budget underscores the season’s ambition, making it the most expansive shoot yet in the series’ history.

The season centers on two rival film productions competing for attention at Cannes, drawing sharp contrasts between American celebrity culture and French social dynamics. Despite the show’s massive popularity in the U.S., it remains relatively unknown among locals in southern France, creating an ironic gap between the production’s scale and public awareness. Open casting calls have drawn large crowds, with many extras discovering the series for the first time.

Original cast member Helena Bonham Carter exited the production after a week due to creative differences, reportedly over the tone of her character’s performance. She was quickly replaced by Laura Dern, who has a prior working relationship with White from 'Enlightened' and 'Year of the Dog.' The French cast includes Vincent Cassel, Nadia Tereszkiewicz, and Laura Smet, adding authenticity to the setting. While the actual Cannes Film Festival won’t be disrupted, the production will re-create the event immediately afterward, using the Palais des Festivals and red carpet infrastructure.

The city of Cannes actively courted the production after missing out on Season 2, streamlining bureaucratic processes and offering tailored support. Deputy mayor Sophie Mouysset noted the shoot will generate an estimated 17,000 hotel nights. Filming will pause during peak tourist season, with Paris interiors shot at the historic Hôtel Lutetia. The season promises to explore themes of fame, visibility, and relational power, inspired by real interactions between the production team and French service staff.
