Nintendo has re-released Star Fox 64 as a new version titled Star Fox for the Switch 2, launching exclusively on June 25. While the single-player campaign remains faithful to the 1997 original—complete with the same level design, branching paths, and core gameplay—it now features updated visuals that highlight the Switch 2's capabilities. New animated cutscenes add depth to the characters of Fox, Falco, Slippy, and Peppy, showing them interacting outside of combat and offering a more nuanced take on their dynamics. The remake also includes re-recorded voice dialogue, though some classic lines like Peppy’s 'It’s quiet... too quiet' have been altered or removed, which may surprise longtime fans.

Beyond the nostalgic single-player experience, the standout addition is a new online multiplayer mode supporting up to eight players in 4v4 objective-based dogfights. During a preview event, gameplay on the map Sector Y offered a capture-the-flag-style mode with AI enemies, strategic portals, and power-ups like cluster missiles and healing items. A powerful beam attack, reminiscent of Dragon Ball, adds a high-impact option in chaotic aerial battles. The multiplayer introduces a layer of unpredictability and teamwork not present in the original, making it a compelling reason to revisit the franchise.

Despite the excitement, concerns remain about the limited map rotation and changes to iconic dialogue. However, the overall demo was well-received for maintaining the original’s spirit while expanding its scope.
