Director Peter Jackson has addressed the long-standing controversy over Ryan Gosling’s departure from the 2009 film The Lovely Bones. Gosling, who gained 60 pounds for the role of grieving father Jack Salmon, was replaced by Mark Wahlberg during preproduction. At the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Jackson spoke publicly about the recasting, emphasizing that such decisions stem from creative misalignment and are ultimately the filmmakers’ responsibility, not the actor’s fault.

Jackson explained that film chemistry involves complex dynamics between the actor, character, and production team—something difficult to predict during casting. Though he declined to name Gosling directly, he acknowledged the actor’s talent and stressed that misfires happen when the envisioned role doesn’t align with reality. Gosling himself previously said he and Jackson had different ideas about how the character should look, with him believing the father should weigh around 210 pounds.

Saoirse Ronan, who played the lead role, later confirmed the emotional impact of the recast but supported the decision, noting Wahlberg’s real-life experience as a father to multiple children gave him an edge. The film, based on Alice Sebold’s novel, explores grief and healing after a teenage girl’s murder. Despite the behind-the-scenes turbulence, the final cast—including Stanley Tucci, Rachel Weisz, and Susan Sarandon—delivered critically noted performances.
