Android and iPhone texts now encrypted Story flow and key facts
A major step in smartphone messaging security has arrived: end-to-end encrypted texts between Android and iPhone users are now rolling out in beta. This change comes via support for RCS (Rich Communication Services), the modern messaging protocol that replaces outdated SMS. For years, iPhone users relied on Apple’s encrypted iMessage for secure blue-bubble chats, while messages to Android users fell back to unencrypted SMS with green bubbles—lacking encryption, read receipts, and emoji reactions. Android users have had end-to-end encryption among themselves since 2021, but cross-platform messages remained vulnerable. Apple resisted adopting RCS until 2023, under regulatory pressure, and has now added end-to-end encryption to RCS conversations. When enabled, users will see a lock icon to confirm encryption. The rollout is gradual, meaning not all users will see it immediately.
